Xoli Matomela graduated from Rhodes University in South Africa with a Bachelor in Journalism and Media studies specializing in television production, her other major being Philosophy with a particular focus on identity politics. She is the second recipient of the Carte Blanche scholarship and focused on off- beat documentary making during her studies. As a student, Xoli worked in theater, radio, print and television production. Following that she worked as an investigative journalist at Carte Blanche, a weekly current affairs program on pay channel M-Net in South Africa. Her story coverage spanned a variety of topics, from weekly socio–political hard news to the 2010 World cup.
